WISE WARRNAMBOOL - a wise city that wastes not

Warrnambool people will be environmentally informed, ethically motivated consumers of goods and services. We will minimise waste by conserving, avoiding, reducing, recycling and reusing resources at every opportunity. We will significantly reduce land, water and air pollution, including littering and we will no longer be a source of plastics entering the marine environment.

  • Zero recoverable waste to landfill.
  • No littering or pollution to our environment
  • No single use, unrecyclable plastic items are used in Warrnambool.
  • Warrnambool has developed a framework for a closed loop economy

The changes we want by 2026

  • Reduce resource consumption from 8.2 kg to 3 kg per person by 2038 (based on 2015 levels).
  • Increase diversion from landfill to 80%
  • Single use plastic bags phased out • Events in the city are plastic free.
  • 40% Reduction in plastic waste on our beaches.
  • Community and business Zero Waste campaign is developed and implemented.
  • Business models are developed for local businesses to utilise circular economy framework.

Short Term Initiatives

  • Advocate for a closed loop local economy which reuses and recycles ALL waste.
  • Introduce/Utilise a Food Organics, Green Organics (FOGO) collection in the kerbside collection.
  • Investigate, support and invest in local/onshore, stable recycling markets.
  • Investigate the feasibility and sustainability of waste to energy models.
  • Support campaigns like the Plastic Free Alliance and Good Will Nurdle Hunting to engage, advocate for and support behaviour change and community action.
  • Council will develop the Warrnambool Pollution Solution Plan and information program.
